What is Chiropractic?
A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.
Can anyone have Chiropractic treatment?
Chiropractic is suitable to the majority of people, including newborn babies, expectant mothers, sports enthusiasts, office workers and the elderly.
Is everybody treated in the same way?
No. Each treatment plan is tailored to take into account your individual needs, preferences and lifestyle.
How long does treatment take?
The initial consultation appointment lasts 1-1½ hours. Follow-up appointments last approximately 30 minutes; depending upon the treatment.
How often will I need to come for treatment?
This depends on several factors including:
- your condition and it’s severity.
- how long the condition has been there.
- how your body responds to treatment.
- how much of your chiropractor’s advice you follow.
It is important to keep your appointments and have regular treatment. Following your chiropractor's advice will give you the optimum and quickest positive outcome.
Will the treatment hurt?
Chiropractic treatment is usually painless. If your muscles are in spasm then you may experience some tenderness. Your chiropractor will alter your treatment to make you more comfortable.
Occasionally you may feel more uncomfortable or stiff after treatment for a day or so. Your chiropractor will be able give you some advice on this.
What is the ‘popping’ noise?
This is the formation of a gas bubble when a joint has gone through it’s full range of motion. This is a natural phenomenon and does not hurt.
Why should I return for treatment if I feel fine?
Your chiropractor has treated you, allowing your body to heal. If you have a long-standing injury or do the same activities that caused your complaint in the first place, then regular treatment and advice will reduce the likelihood of another painful episode.
Have I got a “trapped nerve” or “slipped disc”?
These terms give a broad diagnosis. Your chiropractor will examine you and give you be clearer idea of your diagnosis at your next appointment.
Do I have to pay for treatment?
You will need to pay for your treatment. If you are covered by private medical insurance you will be able to reclaim your costs from your insurance provider.
What is the British Chiropractic Association (BCA)?
The BCA is the largest and longest-standing association for chiropractors in the UK, requiring education to international standards and the highest levels of training and conduct form it’s members.
What is the General Chiropractic Council (GCC)?
The GCC is the body established by Parliament to regulate the chiropractic profession under the Chiropractors Act 1994. It is a criminal offence to be called a Chiropractor if you are not registered with the GCC.
